Happy New Year dear readers! 2018 makes me feel really old....learner drivers born in 2001!! What better way to kick start the year with some motorsport. Having given the Plum Pudding meeting at Mallory Park on Boxing Day a miss this time around, it was the annual New Year's Day meeting in the heart of Britain's second city that saw The Spectator shake off the post-Christmas blues and head trackside.
With a civilised 2pm start, this was a four formula meeting that was headlined by the "Best in Britain Championship" for Stock Rods. A very healthy entry was on show for this prestigious title and the small 1300cc-1400cc mostly Vauxhall Corsa's, provided some excellent action.

Stuart Smyth (No.447) won the final and with it the title of Best in Britain. He's got another 364 days as holder too!

You can't have an oval meeting without some form of contact racing and the Ministox were out for 3 races. Catering for 11-16 year olds who want to progress on to F1/F2 stock car racing, the Minis are kitted out with bumpers front and rear to give the young drivers the chance to practise their skills before moving on to bigger machinery. Charlie Sime winning the final on this day and interesting to note that there was a healthy turnout of female racers which bodes well for the sport's future.

Incarods are the most basic "Rod" formula that promoters Incarace have on their portfolio of categories. Although the Incarods saw the smallest fields of the meeting they certainly provided some very entertaining racing.

So finally on to Bangers...Banger racing is trying to rejuvenate itself of late and on this particular day it was Back to Basics rules for the smash and bash boys and girls. There was some very interesting tin on display too with a couple of Vauxhall Zafira people carriers plus and Alfa Romeo 156....well I think it was! Indeed it was one of the Zafira's that ended up surviving the least damaged in the Destruction Derby that rounded out the meeting.

Definitely the award for exit of the meeting....it's Sean apparently if you turn your head upside down.... |
A thoroughly enjoyable meeting this was and a good way to start the year's spectating. The weather was less enjoyable though with unforecast raing setting in as darkness descended and the floodlights came on. Coupled with a biting cold wind it made for less than ideal viewing conditions to say the least. I always say when I've been to a short oval meeting that I must go to more but never do. I will try to change that in 2018. Admission was £15 with a multi-meeting programme purchased for £2
